Boat Cover Fabric Guide: 7oz vs. 9oz vs. Sunbrella
Which marine fabric to choose — and the one counterintuitive fact (breathable beats “waterproof”) that most sites won’t tell you.
Heavier fabric and Sunbrella last longer and carry longer warranties. If your boat lives in strong, year-round sun (think Florida), step up to 9oz or Sunbrella. For lighter use or seasonal storage, 7oz is a solid value. And don’t chase “100% waterproof” — a breathable cover protects better (here’s why).
The three fabrics we offer
| Fabric | Weight & feel | Fabric warranty | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7oz polyester | Lightest, easiest to handle on/off | 3 years | Budget-friendly; seasonal or lighter-use boats |
| 9oz polyester | Heavier, tougher, more abrasion-resistant | 5 years | Year-round use and more demanding climates |
| Sunbrella acrylic | Premium solution-dyed acrylic; best UV life | 6 years | Harsh, constant sun and the longest service life |
All three are solution-dyed and breathable marine fabrics — the differences are weight, UV longevity, and warranty.
Why “solution-dyed” matters
In a solution-dyed fabric, the color pigment is added to the liquid fiber before it’s spun, so the color runs all the way through each strand (like a carrot, orange to the core). Cheaper fabrics are dyed on the surface after weaving, so the color sits on top and fades fast in the sun. Solution-dyed is why a quality marine cover keeps its color for years instead of going chalky and washed-out.
Water-resistant vs. “waterproof” vs. breathable
This is the fact most cover pages skip: a fully waterproof cover is usually the wrong choice. A sealed, non-breathable fabric (vinyl/laminate) traps the warm, moist air under the cover; it condenses and breeds mold and mildew on your seats and electronics. Our fabrics are highly water-repellent but breathable — they shed rain while letting interior moisture escape. The trade-off is that the water-repellent finish wears down over a few years and should be re-treated (a fabric guard) to keep water beading. Pair any cover with a support pole and a vent and you get the best of both: water sheds off, moisture escapes.
Polyester vs. acrylic: how they age
Polyester starts out very strong and abrasion-resistant, but ultraviolet light slowly weakens it — noticeably within about five years of hard sun. Solution-dyed acrylic (Sunbrella) is a bit softer to start but holds its strength and color far longer under intense UV. In plain terms: for a trailered or seasonally stored boat, heavier polyester (9oz) is a great value; for a boat that bakes in the sun all year, Sunbrella is worth the upgrade.
How to choose for your boat
- Strong, year-round sun (Florida, Gulf, coastal): 9oz or Sunbrella — UV longevity matters most.
- Seasonal / winter storage: heavier polyester (9oz) for durability through the off-season; 7oz if budget is the priority.
- Frequent on/off or trailering: a lighter, snug fabric is easier to handle; make sure it’s a properly fitted (custom) cover so it doesn’t flap at highway speed.
- Mooring / kept outdoors: prioritize water-shedding plus a support pole and vents to avoid pooling and mildew.
What about color?
Darker colors (navy, black) generally hold up to UV a little better because more pigment means more UV blocking — the trade-off is they absorb more heat. Lighter colors run cooler. Either way, with solution-dyed fabric the color is locked in; pick the look you like.
Frequently asked questions
Is a heavier cover always better?
Heavier lasts longer and is tougher, but it’s also harder to handle. For a boat that sees less sun or gets stored seasonally, 7oz is a smart value; for constant sun, go 9oz or Sunbrella.
Are your covers waterproof?
They’re highly water-repellent and breathable — on purpose. A fully waterproof cover traps moisture and causes mildew. Breathable sheds rain while letting interior moisture escape.
Will the color fade?
Solution-dyed fabric resists fading far better than surface-dyed material. Extended sun can still cause slight change over years, but it stays true much longer.
Do I ever need to re-treat the fabric?
Over time the water-repellent finish wears down. When water stops beading, a fabric guard restores repellency and extends the cover’s life.
